COACHING is focused on the future and improving performance. It is non-directive and client-driven. COACHING supports personal and professional growth through emphasis on action, accountability and follow-through. It assumes individuals can generate their own solutions within a discovery based framework. COACHING holds the client capable of setting and reaching their own objectives. If a client is experiencing difficulty with daily functioning, mental health or past-trauma that is impeding the coaching work, a client may be referred to clinical counselling.
Where coaching is focused on the future and performance, CLINICAL COUNSELLING or psychotherapy is focused on the past and supporting clients to repair and find peace through improving coping in the present moment. Clinical Counselling may be more directive than coaching due to evidence-based support for trauma and care of mental health.
Clinical Counselling helps people improve their mental, emotional and physical health while encouraging positive relationships with self, others, and the larger community. It is focused on exploring the origin of symptoms, addressing challenges with daily functioning, and healing and repairing the past. This can include resolving traumatic memories and states of being affecting one's mental health.

Yes! The Akoya model was built for therapy clients living across BC or coaching clients living anywhere. We start by working online, then optionally in-person or outdoors, and finally adding a retreat if you like. Our two locations are resort towns with many services. So fly in for just the day or stay a few and make a weekend of it!

The International Coaching Federation Global Coaching Client Study shows most clients reported improved work performance, better business management, more efficient time management, increased team effectiveness, and more growth and opportunities. The same study found that coaching clients noted greater self-confidence, enhanced relationships, more effective communications skills, better work-and-life balance and an improvement in wellness. Nearly 70 percent of individuals indicated they had at least made back their initial investment. The median suggests that a client who achieved financial benefit from coaching can typically expect a ROI of more than three times the amount spent.

Clinical counselling helps people improve their mental, emotional and physical health while encouraging positive relationships with self, others, and the larger community. The building of a trusting and comfortable relationship between client(s) and counsellor is important as counselling may cover topics of distress, therefore questions or comments on the counselling process are invited at any time.
Therapy can help a person to gain a new understanding about their problems and to acquire new ways of coping with and solving those problems. Therapy can help a person to develop new skills and to change behaviour patterns. Therapy can contribute to an increased understanding of self and others.

We welcome rain, snow, or shine! Hey. We’re Canadians. Generally, we just put on gear and head outside. But we do have the Riverside Therapy Studio in the Courtenay location and the Beachside Therapy Studio in Tofino for refuge as needed – so that’s always an option. Your call.

No. Art as therapy is a form of personal expression to support emotional growth. It is not about making something beautiful but that could happen by accident!
